Chatter in the Treehouse
Seen from the tree:
Anyone out there play golf?
Accenture PGA Match Play at our own Dove Mountain begins today. Rumor has it that Tiger Woods has decided to participate, though Luke Donald seems unconcerned. And the weather man predicts a perfect ‘Chamber of Commerce’ week of mid-high 70’s. Tucson is looking good!
Still reeling from the recent arrest (and subsequent release) of a prominent veteran newscaster for – of all things – shoplifting (ruh, roh), our town welcomes the annual ‘Fiesta de los Vaqueros’ and all the festivities that accompany the rodeo events which are so highly anticipated that kids get two days off from school!
The world’s longest non-mechanized parade is scheduled for Thursday and considering the many ‘furlough’ days the city and county workers get, we have to wonder who will clean up all that horse poo?
There will be so many cowboys and cowgirls we’ll think we’ve been transported back in time or perhaps, to Tombstone! From mutton-bustin and barrel racing to steer wrestling and bareback riding, competition is intense and while bull riding is always a nail-biting show, we give a big thanks to all those rodeo clowns who are out there for more than entertainment.
Blowing in the wind:
President’s Day: a celebration of the birthdays of two past presidents and presumably, their successors. Though a nice gesture and paid holiday for some, aren’t there more deserving reasons for a federal holiday? For instance, in 1962 John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth? Ironically, in 1792 George Washington signed an act creating the Post Office, yet a mere 220 years later there’s no mail delivery on the day we should commemorate it!
The world lost a phenomenal talent when Whitney Houston passed away. But seriously, what were they thinking to even suggest her internment at a place exclusively reserved for those who gave their very lives for our freedom?
Fat Tuesday, Mischief Day, and the end of carnival season all mark the day before Lent, (Ash Wednesday). Much like eating the entire cake before starting your diet; from one extreme to the next, leaving others to wonder if there’s a purpose and what the anticipated outcome might be.
Climb on up and chat awhile. We don’t solve all the world’s problems by kicking them around, but it feels good to think we could!

Ha! I was travelling that prairie road when I suddenly got a chill! But I'm for any day being a family day - and who needs a reason anyway? I'm intrigued with Louis Reil and just what made him infamous. Just can't please every one all the time..
Comment by Mick Lewis on February 21, 2012 at 8:58am The February holiday is a strange one here in Canada, for starters it is not a federal holiday, it is provncial. In Saskatchewan it is "family day" for families to get together, great idea to make people travel the prairie roads when we could get some serious nasty weather. In Manitoba it is "Louis Riel day", a character with a strong following in the prairies in his day, but although a hero to many, a criminal, hunted down by the North West Mounted police. On Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, it is known as "Islander day". Looks like in the US and Canada, the politicians struggled for a genuine reson to have yet another official holiday!
